Geneva Trip Recap

In the first week of March, a delegation of 16 of our members went on our Team’s annual Geneva Trip. Over the span of two days, we had the chance to visit the main European hub of the United Nations. We enjoyed a guided tour through the historic Palais des Nations and were allowed a peek into various conference rooms, such as the one used by Human Rights Council. Later that same day, representatives of the UNHCR joined us at the Swiss Mission to the UN to give us insights into the Agency’s incredibly important work and current challenges. After these two very insightful meetings, our delegation enjoyed a lovely evening on the shores of Lac Leman.
On the second day, we visited the International Committee of the Red Cross Museum and learned more about the humanitarian organisation’s history and core principles. The subsequent talk we had with the ICRC Head of Digital Transformation and Partnership Engagement gave us a lot to think about and left a lasting impression on all of us. In the afternoon, we had the opportunity to visit UNITAR, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, where we enjoyed a presentation on the Sustainable Development Goals and got to know more about how the Institute operates.

We would like to extend our thanks to the FDFA, the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the UN, and all the people that welcomed us in Geneva. Furthermore, we are grateful to our main sponsors Swiss Re and ICC Switzerland as well as our supporters UZH, UZH Alumni and VSUZH for making learning experiences like this visit to Geneva possible.

Guest Speaker Event

We look forward to welcoming Adiba Qasim to our Weekly Session on the 23rd of March 2022. She will speak about her experiences working with international media and humanitarian organisations on raising awareness about the Yazidi Genocide and giving women and children who survived the ISIS massacre a voice. She has also worked with cases of child soldiers who had been brainwashed and recruited by Isis.

The Guest Speaker Event will start at 18:30 in KOL-H-317. We hope to see many of you there!

-Ridika, Head of Operations

Second Topic Block of the Spring Semester

Having successfully concluded the first topic block of this semester with the passing of a draft resolution, we are happy to be able to announce our second topic block. As we are hosting a guest speaker at the first session, we thought to tie the two together by choosing a topic in which expert insight is especially valuable. Since Adiba Qasim has worked with child soldiers that were brainwashed by ISIS, we will debate on ‘’The Rehabilitation of Child Soldiers’’. The topic block will be chaired by our Vice President August and our Team member Melkon.

We look forward to seeing you at the sessions!

-Ridika, Head of Operations

Youth Summit

The annual Youth Summit hosted by the Youth Ambassadors of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation Switzerland is taking place on the 2nd and 3rd of April 2022. The Summit will feature a debate chaired by members of MUN Team UZH. To join a weekend dedicated to discussing the future of climate and human rights, register through the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeUcY2TZiBMXWfenPZqZSeBqKKF7Actrjge6IhkRF4u-KJDNQ/viewform.

UNYA FriMUN Conference: The Nile Crisis

Join UNYA and FriMUN on the 8th and 9th of April in Fribourg for the Security Council Crisis. The future is looking more uncertain by the minute. Use your talents to shed some light on a possible upcoming crisis in the Nile region between two of the local powers, Egypt and Ethiopia. Represent either a member of these two administrations and achieve hydro-dominance or join the Security Council and try what the Security Council tries to do often, prevent war. This Crisis will show how much a Security Council with Switzerland as a non-permanent member can really do. We‘ll see you in Fribourg!
